Seasonal Changes

The seasons are changing. How can you help your horse cope?

With changing weather, horse owners become nervous about the increased risk of colic in their horses: whether a relatively mild case of gas colic or something more serious, it’s no fun and we wish we could avoid it.

The number one cause of colic during cold months is a lack of fresh, unfrozen water. Horses must drink 10-12 gallons of fresh water every day and can dehydrate quickly if water is unavailable. Horses that aren’t getting enough water are at a greater risk for conditions such as simple indigestion or impaction. (Source: AAEP)

One way to encourage your horse to drink enough is by using Gallagher’s Water as part of your daily feeding and hydration program. One packet in two gallons of fresh water will get fluids into your horse and the electrolytes will encourage your horse to continue drinking. A hydrated horse is less prone to colic.

Numerous testimonies from customers and veterinarians indicate that Gallagher’s Water can be a vital tool to have on hand when your horse is exhibiting signs of colic.

As always, consult your veterinarian. And have some Gallagher’s Water in your tack box!
